By Divya Bhati: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been dominating the headlines for months. The tech arena is moving towards advancements in new technologies, and big players including Google, Microsoft, and Meta are heavily investigating to stay ahead. Even Amazon is not lagging behind in the AI race, as CEO Andy recently highlighted how much the company is investing in artificial intelligence.
During the company’s Q2 2023 earnings call on Thursday, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasised the company’s significant investment in artificial intelligence (AI). Jassy revealed that “every single one” of Amazon’s businesses has multiple generative AI initiatives underway. While discussing the AWS infrastructure and services that can support AI applications, he highlighted the integral role of AI across the entire company.
He explained that the company offers infrastructure and services via AWS that can help power many generative artificial intelligence applications, which Jassy did discuss on the call, but he also stressed just how important AI is across the company as a whole.
Talking about the AI initiatives, Jassy said, “They range from things that help us be more cost-effective and streamlined in how we run operations and various businesses, to the absolute heart of every customer experience in which we offer. It’s true in our Stores business, it’s true in our AWS business, it’s true in our advertising business, it’s true in all our devices – and you can just imagine what we’re working on with respect to Alexa there – it’s true in our entertainment businesses… every single one. It is going to be at the heart of what we do. It’s a significant investment and focus for us,” Jassy’s statement as reported by The Verge.
Furthermore, Jassy hinted at potential AI-based improvements for Alexa, which might be announced at the upcoming Amazon devices event on September 20th. In a previous earnings call, Jassy mentioned the development of an improved large language model (LLM) specifically for Alexa.
In AWS specifically, the company in its official blog emphasised how it has been working to make artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) more accessible and understandable for everyone. Amazon believes that these technologies can bring significant benefits to people and businesses and, for the same, is investing millions in establishing the technology.
“Over the years, AWS has invested in the democratizing of access to-and understanding of -AI, ML and generative AI. Through announcements around the latest developments in generative AI and the establishment of a $100 million Generative AI Innovation Center program, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been at the forefront of helping drive understanding about the role that these innovations can play in the lives of both individuals and organizations,” one of the official blog post reads.
Additionally, job listings earlier this year indicated Amazon’s efforts to recruit talent that can contribute to enhancing Amazon Search’s user experience through interactive conversations.
Besides Amazon, other prominent tech CEOs have also shown interest in AI. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, emphasised the significance of AI and machine learning in their entire range of products.
Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, referred to Google’s Search Generative Experience as the next major advancement in search. Additionally, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, revealed that they are actively working on various innovative products, including creative tools and AI agents, using their LLaMA LLM technology.
These developments highlight the increasing investment and focus major tech companies are putting into AI, integrating it at the core of their operations to enhance efficiency and improve customer experiences.
